Only Takes A Second
Chapter One.
Sleep wasnt happening tonight. Sleep never happened any night. I tossed and turned quietly so I didnt wake him up. He hadnt had a decent amount of sleep in the last 3 months due to traveling all over the world. The different time zones had finally caught up with him. I decided to get up seeing as I wasnt getting back to sleep. I carefully swung my legs out of the covers and over the edge of the bed. My feet found my slippers that were beside my bed.
The lounge room was quiet, dark and eerie. My fingers found a blanket and I wrapped it around my body. I sunk onto the couch just sitting in silence. I heard faint snores from Louis’ bedroom. They began to mix in with Harry’s. I sighed and tried to figure out the best way to make a cup of tea or coffee without making noise. I wasnt coming up with any good ideas. I looked out the window and saw that it was beginning to get light. I thew the blanket off and tiptoed back into my room. Harry still slept in the same position I left him in. His curls were laid out over the white pillow and his face looked like he was in pure peace. I smiled and carefully kissed him on the forehead before putting on some warm clothes and heading outside.
London at this time was beautiful. More beautiful than ever before. I wrapped my arms around my body, shielding me from the cold air. It was only a few short blocks to the local supermarket. It luckily was open early hours. Only in London.
Luckily as well, no paps were around. I smiled at how normal everything felt. I missed my old life. My life where I could walk to the local park or down the street without being blinded by camera flashes. They followed me everywhere, even when Harry was away. I couldnt escape it so I would lock myself in the house until hours like now so I could have some peace. I heard a camera flash and my head snapped around. There was one outside. All it took was one. I groaned and kept my head down. I ordered a coffee and some food for when the boys woke up. After I paid, I walked swiftly back towards home. The guy followed me until I decided enough was enough.
He stopped in his tracks as I turned around.
“Can you do me a favor and just leave me alone? I’m sick of you all following me. I’m not the famous one alright? Just leave me alone.” I said frustrated and bordering on angry. His face was shell shocked.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered and backed away. I nodded and kept on walking. I didnt dare turn around as I neared the apartment building.
I quietly unlocked the front door and set the food onto the counter, putting the pieces of food onto separate plates for each of the boys. As if on que, Niall burst through the door with a smile on his face and deep bags under his eyes.
“I smelt food.” He smiled wider. I smiled at his expression.
“You need sleep Nialler.” I said as I handed the plate to him. Not handing food over to Niall was dangerous. We had all been on the end of his wrath. Niall was attached to his food. It was a very long relationship and I didnt see any cracks what so ever. I always made sure to either buy or make more just for Niall.
“I got as much as I could” He said through his mouthful of food. He barely sounded Irish when he ate. But when alcohol was involved, yeah, you could tell he was Irish.
“Are you alright Megstar?” Niall asked as I sat down on a stool next to him.
“I was followed again today. And I snapped.” I sighed. Niall chuckled slightly and patted my back.
“We all get like that.” Niall said softly.
I had to give him some credit. He understood just about everything and never judged. He needed a girlfriend. She would be insanely lucky.
“Food!” I heard a familiar voice cheer from behind us. Louis came running into the kitchen and looked at the food on his plate.
“They were out of carrots.” I laughed and earned a glare off Louis.
“I so regret saying that now.” He groaned and poured himself a cup of Yorkshire tea.
“You should take some in for Harry. I doubt that boy is removing himself from that bed.” Niall said nudging me in the side. I nodded and grabbed a cup and filled it up with some tea.
I carefully kicked open the bedroom door and found him sitting up reading something on his phone with a smile on his face. He looked up at me and smiled.
“Well there went that plan.” I sighed and walked over to his side of the bed. He carefully took the cup in his hands and took a sip, shivering as the warm liquid ran down his throat. I curled up to his side and handed him the plate of food. He kissed my forehead and took a bite out of his toast.
“This feels better.” I whispered and tightened my grip on his waist, kissing his chest before resting my head on it. Harry chuckled as he swallowed the food.
“Its not the same when Louis did it.” He laughed louder. I poked his ribs earning a groan from him.
“Bet he didnt bring you breakfast in bed.” I laughed and tilted my head up to look at him. He was looking down at me and smiling. His green eyes were shinning as his smile touched his dimples.
I often looked at Harry and understood just why so many girls cried and fell over him. I was exactly the same as them.
“Haz?” Liam called from the hall.
“Naked with Meg.” He yelled back and I punched him. I hopped off the bed and answered the door.
“He lied.” I laughed.
“I figured. Simon wants us in the office this morning for about an hour or so.” Liam said looking past me to Harry sitting in the bed.
“I dont want to Daddy! I want to hug my girl all morning.” Harry whined, throwing himself under the covers, groaning and whinging. Liam chuckled.
“I’ll get him up.” I smiled at Liam. He smiled and walked back down the hall. I shut the door and locked it tightly.
Harry was still under the covers as I tiptoed over to him. I climbed onto the bed and pulled the covers back and slipped under them. I placed kisses all over his chest, hearing the moans and groans as my lips made love bites all over him.
“This wont get me up.” He whispered laughing. I looked up at him through my eyelashes and winked. His face was priceless as I hooked my fingers inside of his boxers and pulled them down. Harry hissed as my breath blew over his length. He began to harden under my touch as I ran my hands up and down his legs.
“As if this will wake me up.” Harry winked as I took him into my mouth.
Yes it would. It always did.
Chapter Two.
Harry’s P.O.V
Sitting in Simon’s office always made me nervous. I never knew if there was good or bad news coming our way. The lads and I sat in front of Simon and waited for his news. All fingers crossed as he took his glasses off and looked us in the eyes. I gulped, fearing this wasnt going to be good.
“Now boys, you have just completed a massive tour so I assume you are all pretty tired.” He started saying. We all nodded in agreement, Niall yawned for emphasium.
“You all have some well deserved time off before heading back to Sweden for the next album. Only, this album is different. You all get free reign. That means you pick the songs, you write the songs. You get to make all the big decisions. This album is yours to own.” He smiled and waited until it really sunk into us.
“How long off?” Liam asked.
“About a month. But be prepared going into the studio with songs and ideas.” Simon said before he let us go.
I bounced into the apartment later that day knowing that Meg was home. She wrote articles from home and I was happy to find her sitting on the couch typing away at her computer, pausing every so often to think or to rewrite. I quietly walked up behind her and placed my hands over her eyes. She jumped slightly at my unexpected touch.
“Scare me to death Styles.” Meg laughed and smiled up at me. I cupped her face and lightly kissed her lips.
“Sorry.” I whispered touching our foreheads together and closing my eyes.
“Oh, please dont tell me there is another long tour?” She said sadly. I smiled and chuckled.
“No, much better. A month home and then off to Sweden for our next album.” I smiled.
We all loved Sweden and our Swedish fans. We were so grateful for them and they repaid us by flashing. We laughed and just accepted it. Getting them to stop wasnt something we wanted. I did find it a little uncomfortable after I started dating Meg. Luckily she thought it was hilarious.
“You’re right. That is better. You need to go home and see your Mum.” Meg smiled turning back to her work. I sat in the chair next to her desk to continue our conversation.
“You had lunch with her the other day.” I laughed and she nodded.
“Amazing woman if I do say so.” Meg smiled brightly.
“She loves you as well.” I said as I stood up to make a cup of tea.
Meg’s P.O.V
With the final decimal point at the end of my sentence and the click of the ‘send’ button, my article for the week was finished. I jumped up from my chair and jumped onto Harry who was laid out on the couch. He had his eyes half shut. He grunted as I jumped onto him and snuggled into his arms. I smiled, so content with how natural it all was. It made me giggle.
“I love and hate it at the same time when you do that.” Harry laughed and kissed the top of my head.
“What are you watching anyway?” I asked looking at the tv.
“Just a music show. We’ve been on countless times.” Harry sighed. I looked at him with a sympathetic look. I knew he just wanted to come home and relax instead of seeing his face everywhere on tv.
“Want anything for lunch?” I asked.
“I did promise you a meal out, just the two of us.” Harry smiled and started pushing me up.
“Oh yeah, us plus the thousands of screaming girls and the paps. So romantic.” I laughed and kissed his nose before walking into the bedroom to change.
I settled on some warmer clothes as the winter season really settled in. Harry let me borrow one of his beanies and scarves and we set out to find some food.
Harry held my hand tightly as one of his minders helped us get through the maze of paps that waited outside. Girls screamed as Harry’s locks made an appearance. He smiled and waved at them making them scream and cry even more. A few paps followed us as we walked down the streets, searching for the right kind of resturant.
We found it. A simple cafe which sent both of our stomachs growling. We asked for a table for two and sat down to study the menu. Girls stood across the street waving and singing at Harry. He sighed but forced a smile for them.
“You dont need to smile for them every second.” I whispered over the table.
“Part of my job.” He smiled and winked.
“You arent at work now are you?” I challenged.
“I hate it when you’re right.” He laughed and blew me a kiss.
A chorus of ‘awws’ waved over to us and I blushed. Some fans hadnt been supportive of me with Harry. Sending hateful tweets and saying horrible things to my face took its toll early on. But I stuck by Harry and he told me everything would be alright. And it was. As the months ticked by, the fans figured out I wasnt leaving so they eventually warmed up to me. Every now and then I would get hate which would trigger my past demons.
Something Harry had witnessed before and didnt want to have happen again.
Harry ordered a burger and I ordered the smaller version of his burger. I knew Harry would be eating half of mine anyway. Harry reached for my hands across the table as I heard faint camera clicks. I did my best to ignore them and stay in the moment with Harry.
“Now this is what I missed the most.” He smiled my favorite grin. The one where his dimples are in full force. I blushed and giggled.
“Its not fun doing this by yourself. To others it just looks strange.” I laughed. Harry laughed as well and leaned over the table and kissed me. Flashes went wild as his lips touched mine. I pulled back as the food arrived and we ate.
Harry’s P.O.V
I knew that look. I also had that feeling in the pit of my stomach. I watched her carefully as we ate. Her eyes were sad and withdrawn. Something happened and I was determined to fix it. Of course I knew half of the problem. The screaming girls across the street and the paps clicking our every move. I knew where Meg would go and it scared me. I got her out just in time but would I be so lucky as a second time rolled around? I was thankful that the first time didnt leak to the media. Simon couldnt have covered that up. They did get sneaky shots of Meg coming out of the doctors but we passed it off as she was ill.
Meg was ill. But not the flu kind where you take a few antibiotics and in a few days its out of your system, no. This one haunted her and followed her like a black cloud wherever she went.
Meg was a cutter.
Most guys would have turned and run far away but not me. I couldnt leave her. I promised us both I would never turn away from her. She kept me together and grounded as did the lads and my family. Meg needed to overcome her demons and I was determined for her to face them.
After lunch, I paid the check and grabbed Meg’s hand and we walked the long way home. It was mainly backstreets that I had found and one of them lead to a little park. A few kids discovered it and played on it from time to time. I was like a little kid, playing on all the pieces of equipment. Meg sat on the swing with her arms holding her stomach. She looked up to the sky and I saw a single tear roll down her cheek. I stopped my childish ways and had her in my arms within seconds. She sobbed into my chest while I rubbed her back in comfort.
“I cant hold it together anymore Harry. I just can’t.” Meg sobbed. I kissed her head before speaking.
“Its alright baby, I know you can get through it. You just need to breath and relax.” I hushed. The speech usually worked on her. Today, no such luck.
Demons reared their ugly heads once again.
Chapter Three.
Harry’s P.O.V
I didnt want to leave Meg’s side. She did her best to smile and try and overcome these demons but nothing was really genuine. She was struggling and I knew it. The day was hours away, where I would be going to stay with Mum for the week. I wanted someone to stay with Meg while I was gone but the others were all over the place. I sighed running a hand through my curls. I didnt know what to do. If I stayed behind with Meg she would feel guilty and I didnt want that. I couldnt just go and leave her on her own.
“Why dont you bring her with you?” Mum suggested over our phone call.
“You think she’d go for it?”
“Honey, we’d love to have her here. Plus, that way we can all keep an eye on her.” Mum said calmly.
“It wouldnt be too crowded?” I asked and Mum laughed.
“You forget our house on the weekends. Kids everywhere.” We both laughed.
“Thanks Mum. See you tomorrow.”
“You’re welcome darling. Have a safe drive and I’ll see you both tomorrow.” She said and we both hung up.
I sighed and walked back into the bedroom where Meg was resting. I pushed open the door and saw Meg sitting up reading a book. She turned her head to me and smiled. I walked over to the bed and curled up to her side. I rested my head on her chest and she played with my hair, forgetting about her book. She wrapped her arms around me and kissed the top of my head as I tightened my arms around her waist.
“Have a nice chat with your Mum?” She asked. I nodded against her chest.
“You might want to pack some clothes.” I smiled and waited for her to freak out.
“Excuse me?” She stuttered.
“Mum wants you to come with me.” I smiled looking up at her.
“Harry, I..” I pressed a finger to her lips to cut her off.
“You’re coming with me.”I said sternly and kissed her shocked mouth.
“No arguing with your mother is there?” Meg laughed and yawned.
“Have a rest sweetheart. I’ll pack your bag for you.” I smiled and kissed her lightly.
“Just come cuddle me after you’re done.” She smiled as she closed her eyes.
I moved about the bedroom packing two different bags full of clothes. If I didnt pack the right things for Meg she could just borrow some of mine. She wears my clothes all the time anyway so its not any different. I looked over at Meg who was now in a deep sleep, curled up on her side. I zipped up the bags and set them by the front door before going back to cuddle Meg.
I placed my arms around her and pulled her to my side. I carefully pulled her head onto my chest and kissed the top of it. Silence filled the room as I watched her sleep. She looked so peaceful, like nothing could touch her, like she was safe. That was just the outside. I knew deep inside that something was brewing and it scared me. Probably a little more than it scared her. My phone buzzed in my pocket. I carefully pulled it out and read the text message I recieved.
Lou – Haz, something happened.
I paniced as I read the words over and over. I pressed the call button instead of texting him back.
“Hey Haz.” Lou answered. I heard the other boys talking in the background.
“What happened?” I asked trying to keep my voice down.
“Anyway you can come over to Zayn’s? This cant be said over the phone.” Lou asked.
“Yeah. Give me a second.” I said and hung up.
I carefully pulled my arms away from Meg and kissed her forehead before quickly walking across the hall to Zayn’s apartment.
I knocked on the door and Liam opened the door and ushered me in.
“ What the hell is going on?” I asked as I walked into the lounge room.
Louis looked up at me and handed me a magazine. Mine and Meg’s faces were on the front page.
“ So what? We’re always in magazines” I said angered.
“ Read the headline.” Liam said placing a hand on my shoulder. I sighed and read the headline.
THE TRUTH ABOUT HARRY’S GIRL.
I froze. All the colour drained from my face and my heart beat kicked up a knotch. As I kept reading, a little voice told me to put it down and burn it. I couldnt tear my eyes away from the article. Everything was exposed. Meg had been exposed. An ‘unknown’ source had told the magazine about Meg’s cutting and depression. And worse, they had exaggerated everything, making it worse than it really was. I sat on the couch and placed my hands over my face. I felt like I had failed her. The lads placed their arms around me in support and Lou kissed my cheek. He often did it so it wasnt unusual.
“We’ll help her get through this Harry.” Liam said softly patting my knee with his free hand.
“I failed her.” I whispered, my voice breaking slightly.
“No. Whoever this ‘unknown source’ is failed her. Someone close to her did this, not you.” Niall said.
“You have to tell Meg.” Zayn said next.
“I cant tell her. She would be crushed if she found out.” I said.
“Harry, you have too.” Liam pressed. I looked him dead in the face and I knew he was right. I sighed and stood up. I took the magazine with me so Meg could read it herself.
My hands shook as I pushed open the door to our bedroom. Meg was sitting up and crying. I dropped the magazine by the bed and wrapped my arms around her. She cried into my chest.
“I know.” She said through her sobbing.
“How?”
“Emlia rung me.” She sniffed looking up at me.
“I’m so sorry.” I said kissing her lips lightly and wiping her cheeks of her tears.
“I know who wrote it. Well, I think I do.” She said.
I didnt press her on it. I helped Meg into the shower and waited just outside the door for her. Half way through, I got bored and decided to join her.
“ Scare me half to death why dont you!” Meg yelled as I stepped into the shower behind her. I wrapped my arms around her wet body and held her close. The warm water hit our bodies and I thought it symbolised that our past worried were being washed away.
I just needed to keep holding onto that thought.
Chapter Four.
“Meg, up you get honey.” I whispered to Meg while kissing her forehead. It was the only thing that got her up in the mornings. It was 3:30am and we had to be on the road at 4. Meg stirred and groaned as she rolled over, facing away from me.
“Come on.” I whispered again gently pulling her up. She groaned and yawned as she began to wake up. I smiled and kissed her lips, watching her smile slightly as I helped her up out of the bed. I handed her some clothes and helped her into them. Meg would be fully awake soon but I took my time dressing her properly.
“You’re supposed to undress me.” Meg laughed and yawned. This particular yawn made her whole body shake. I laughed and kissed her forehead once more after zipping her jumper up.
An hour later, I held Meg’s hand as we took the stairs down to my car. A few paps and fans were waiting there for me or any of the lads that came out. Those poor parents of these girls. I hoped that they knew where their children were. Some of them probably didnt. I smiled slightly as I shut the passenger door after Meg was in safely. She kept her head down and covered from the paps and fans.
The drive seemed to take forever. I knew Meg was bouncing to see my Mum again. I was bouncing because I desperately needed a toilet. Meg couldnt stop laughing at me as I frantically drove searching for one. Finally a small service station on the side of the road popped up. I took the right exit and quickly parked the car and jumped out. A few people recognised me but I kept focus on the bathroom.
Luckily I made it before anyone could release pictures of Harry Styles almost wetting his pants.
Meg’s P.O.V
I locked up the car after laughing about Harry’s near accident and walked into the little souvenier shop. I smiled looking around at all the handmade goods they had. My eyes caught onto the most beautiful selection of rings.
“Hey there darling. Would you like to look closer at these rings?” The lovely old woman asked.
“Yes please.” I smiled and watched as she took the cushion out of the glass case and placed it ontop. I picked up the ring that my eyes kept going back too. It was a square green diamond with a gold band. It was the most beautiful ring I had ever seen.
“Try it on.” She smiled. I held out my shakey hand and placed the ring onto my finger. My hand felt heavy with the ring sitting on it. I couldnt wipe the smile off my face.
I jumped slightly when I felt a pair of arms wrap around my waist. I smiled knowing who’s strong arms they were. I turned my head and caught Harry’s lips.
“I see it didnt take you long to find jewellery.” Harry laughed.
“They are beautiful.” I smiled up at the woman.
“They dont sell as well to be honest.” She laughed.
“That I dont understand.” I laughed and begun taking off the ring. Harry’s hands stopped mine.
“Leave it.” He smiled and pulled out his wallet.
“Harry..” I started but his lips cut me off. He handed over some money and the old lady gave him a reciept.
Harry kissed me again and lead me out of the shop. We jumped back into the car and set off for his Mum’s house which was only a few hours away. I held up my hand with my ring on and it glittered in the sunlight. The ring was on my left hand so I had to ask the question.
“Is this an engagement ring?” I asked not meeting his gaze.
“Do you want it to be?” Harry laughed.
“You’re going to have to ask me in a better way.” I laughed just to ease the tension of this conversation.
“How about we use it as a promise ring for now and see what it grows into.” Harry offered.
“Deal.” I smiled returning my focus back to my ring.
“You do realize that the media will have a field day with it.” Harry said. I nodded even though his focus was on the road.
“They can think what they like.” I muttered and looked out the window.
Harry sighed and grabbed my hand and held it for the remainder of the trip.
Harry’s P.O.V
As I turned down the familiar street, I braced myself for seeing thousands of fans waiting outside my house. There wasnt a thousand fans but there was a fair few. The only difference was there was barriers blocking their access to our front lawn. We heard screams from inside the car as I pulled into the driveway. Mum peered her head out of the door and smiled. I turned off the car and jumped out, meeting my Mum halfway for a hug.
“Welcome home honey.” Mum whispered in my ear and kissed my cheek. The passenger door shut as Meg walked towards us. Mum took her arms away from me and placed them around Meg. The fans ‘awwed’ behind us.
“Sweetheart.” Mum whispered as her and Meg hugged tightly.
“Its great to see you Anne.” Meg smiled and Mum ushered us inside the house. I turned quickly to wave to the group of girls who screamed in response.
“Ever since news leaked you were coming home there had been girls everywhere.” Mum said as she poured some tea for Meg and myself. She set the cups in front of us and sat down across the table.
“Are you alright with the media coming out with that story?” Mum asked Meg carefully.
“It hurt because I knew who told.” Meg said.
“Who the hell was it?” Mum said slightly angry. Mum protected the ones she loved. And she was scary when she did so. Meg reached across the table and placed her hand ontop of Mums.
“An old friend who had seen my at my worst. And if you look at the photo closely you can see the scars.” Meg said pulling her sleeve up slightly. Mum gasped as she took in the scars that were permanently etched in her skin. Some you couldnt even see anymore. Others werent so quick at disappearing. Mum lightly traced the scars with her fingers.
“Why do you do this sweetheart?” Mum whispered.
“Because I feel like it takes away my insecurities. I’ve stopped but the urge is always there. It eats away at me. But I have your wonderful son with me and he gives me a reason not to do it.” Meg smiled up at me. I placed my arm around her shoulders and kissed her head.
“Whats the reason?” Mum asked her.
“That I am beautiful in my own way and there is no need to feel insecure. He loves me for who I am, not what I look like.” Meg smiled blinking back tears I saw forming in her eyes. Mum nodded and wiped away a fear tears of her own.
“Please dont do it again.” Mum whispered holding Meg’s hand.
“I will do my best.” Meg smiled back.
Meg and I cuddled up in the lounge room watching a movie while Mum ducked out to grab some things for dinner. We kept hearing the girls singing our songs and calling out my name. It got to the point where I had to go out just to make them stop screaming. It almost worked. I smiled for pictures and did my best to keep them happy.
“How’s Meg?” One fan whispered as I was signing her book.
“She’s doing alright.” I smiled back and she nodded.
“Give her my love.” She whispered and waved goodbye as I walked into my house.
Meg wasnt in the lounge room. She wasnt in the kitchen or anywhere downstairs. I heard a thud upstairs and raced up the stairs and banged on the locked bedroom door.
“Meg!” I yelled, fists banging hard on the wooden door.
“Harry?” My step-dad Robin called.
“Robin help!” I screamed and heard his footsteps race up the stairs.
“I need to get in there.” I raced through my tears. Robin pounded on the door until it broke from its hinges.
“I’ll call an ambulance.” Robin said and raced for a nearby phone.
I ran to Meg’s side and held her in my arms. Her wrists were wide open but not deep enough to kill her. Almost.
“Dont you dare leave me.” I whispered and kissed her forehead.
Meg’s P.O.V
Their voices were driving me insane although I would never say anything. They were Harry’s fans and wanted him and him alone. He sighed and got up to go out to them. Their screams and cries amplified as he walked up to them. I watched from the window. You could tell it was forced. The smile, the laughter, the interest. Harry just wanted time with his family. I shouldnt have been looking on. I had no place.
It would have been best if I didnt move from my seat. I overheard two girls talking about me. I didnt know if Harry could hear it but I sure could.
“Why do you think he is staying with someone who is sucidual? I dont get it. He should just leave her.” One girl said.
“I agree. He’d be better off without her. If she really wanted to do die, why doesnt she just do it already?” The other sniggered.
I walked like a zombie back over to the couch and sat down. I ran my hands through my hair as I fought to keep control. Those girls were right. I would be better off dead. Was I trying to kill myself or was this deeper? Harry was growing tired of me and he would eventually leave me. He shouldnt have to deal with someone like me. Not when he has a massive career ahead of him. He doesnt need to be held back by someone like me. I stood up and walked upstairs. I knew what I had to do.
I gave in to my demon.
I locked the bathroom door and walked over to my make up case. I unzipped it with confident hands and located my hidden razor. It was weightless in my hands as I sunk to the tiled floor. I pulled up my sleeve and placed the razor against my skin. Just one cut should do it. I dragged the sharp edge over my wrist and sighed. I watched as a thin red line formed. It wasnt enough. I cut another and another waiting for the coming blackness. My head was spinning so I placed my head on the cold floor, waiting. I closed my eyes and hoped that they wouldnt open.
A loud banging and yelling came through the door. Harry.
“Meg!” He yelled banging on the door again and again. I blocked him out. He was talking to someone and before I knew it, the door came off its hinges. I was slipping away when arms grabbed me and lips pressed themselves to my forehead.
“Dont you dare leave me.” Harry whispered before the darkness took me away.
Chapter Five.
“Harry, honey stop pacing. You’re making me nervous.” Mum said. I hadnt noticed that I was pacing. I sat down next to Mum in the horrible plastic chairs that was the hospital emergency room. A group of girls had seen me but looked torn as to whether or not to come over. I was glad they didnt. I was more worried about my girl who’s image I couldnt get out of my head. Laying on the bathroom floor, wrists cut up, inches away from death.
I desperately racked my brain to find out why she would have done this. I was coming up blank. Nurses walked in and out of the two double doors but none came over with any sort of news. We just had to wait. I had received texts off the lads, the story was already on tv. I sighed knowing this would make it ten times worse for Meg. I ran a hand through my curls and hung me head. Mum placed her arm around my shoulders and pulled me close to her.
“Thanks Mum.” I whispered.
“We all want her to be alright.” She whispered back kissing my forehead. I relaxed slightly only to tense back up when the nurse came over to us. Her face was blank. I blinked back forming tears, praying to god she was going to give us good news.
“She made it. Only just. If you hadnt had found her when you did, I’m afraid this would have been bad news. She is in horrible shape so we are keeping a very close eye on her. She is asking for you Harry and she wont accept anything without you by her side.” The nurse told me. I breathed a sigh of relief that she was alive. Mum patted me on the back and rung my step Dad to come and get her. I hugged Mum goodbye and followed the nurse to Meg’s side.
I could barely enter the room without breaking down in tears. She looked broken and fragile laying in the bed, curled up and wrists bandaged tightly. Her eyes connected with mine and tears fell from hers. I bounced to her side and wrapped my arms around her. I noticed something else when her hands didnt find their way onto my back. They were chained to the railings of the bed. Sadness filled her eyes as we both studied the restraints.
“ They have me under watch. These are precautionary.” She whispered, sniffing slightly.
“Why did you do it?” I asked carefully, watching her face. Her eyes narrowed as she spoke.
“I heard the girls talking and..something set me off. I’m so sorry Harry.” She said breaking down. I sat on the edge of her bed and held her close. She attempted to wrap her arms around my neck like she would always do but the restraints kept her at bay. I let her get it all out and stayed right where I was. She needed to know I was here and I wasnt going anywhere.
“I love you.” I whispered and kissed the top of her head. She looked up at me through her tear soaked eyes.
“Really?”
“Yes really. I wouldnt say it if I didnt mean it. But I do love you. So much. You’re perfect in my eyes.”I smiled and kissed her shocked lips.
“Ah, you’re awake. We just need to run some tests and then you’re free to sleep.” The nurse said interrupting us.
“When can I go home?” Meg asked.
“Not for a while sweetheart. The doctors are considering moving you to a rehab clinic so you can deal with your problems.”She said.
“I cant go to rehab!”Meg yelled as she tried to sit up but the restraints kept her down. She yanked on them trying to get free. I grabbed her face and tried calming her down.
“I’ll send the doctor around.” The nurse said quickly and walked out of the room.
Meg was still struggling against the restraints.
“Meg, shh.” I hushed over and over again until she finally stopped moving. She sighed as she leaned back into the pillows.
“I am crazy.” She whispered as tears fell from her eyes. I wrapped my arms around her body and held her close.
“No baby, you’re not.” I kissed the top of her head as she cried.
She fell asleep in my arms. I didnt let her go all night.
Meg’s P.O.V
3 weeks since my…attempt. There wasnt any other word for it. The media had grabbed a hold of the story and ran with it. Interviewers asked Harry countless questions about it but he responded calmly, not giving anything away. Making it seem like it was just an accident. We both knew it wasnt an accident. Anne had come to sit with me while Harry was away in Sweden with the boys recording their latest album. All day Anne would sit and chat with me, getting me to tell her everything that was bothering me. She never judged me or told me to get over it.
“I’m sorry Anne.” I spoke up during one of our many sits.
“Dont be sorry sweetheart.” She smiled comfortingly and grabbed my hand to give it a gentle squeeze.
“No, I promised you I would do my best to stop it and I failed.” I said narrowing my eyes.
“Hey, dont do this to yourself. These things are tough to overcome. No one expects you get over this in a few minutes. You need to take your time sorting through this.” Anne smiled and sat on the edge of my bed.
“Honey, it might be best if you do go into the clinic. Just until you can figure everything out.” Anne suggested. It was hard to disagree with her. She made sense. I sighed defeated. I knew this time would come, I just wasnt ready for it.
I called the nurse back in and accepted the rehab suggestion. After I agreed to rehab, they took the restraints off. My wrists were still bandaged up and healing. I made myself a promise, I would never do this again. I would never again put Harry through this.
Harry’s P.O.V
That text message changed alot for me. Mum had informed me that Meg was heading into rehab to deal with her depression. That meant I wouldnt be able to see her for a long time. Only a phone call here and there. I tried focusing on recording but my mind was everywhere. I couldnt hit the notes properly, I missed my timing into the song and I got the words wrong.
“Do you want to take 5 Haz?” Liam asked. I nodded and removed the headphones. The room outside the booth was silent. They lads were unable to find the words to say to me. I sat down on the couch next to me and looked between my band mates and best friends. Their eyes were full of sympathy.
I stood up and walked to the door. “I just need some air.” I muttered before pushing the door out of my way. I wrapped my arms around my body, trying to warm myself up. I stupidly forgot a jumper. I sat down on a bench and ran my hands through my hair, sighing. I was exhausted. I pulled out my phone and dialed Meg’s number. I didnt even expect her to pick up. Her voicemail message would be enough for now.
“Hello?”She answered.
“You picked up.” I smiled wide, hearing her voice.
“Of course I did.” She laughed lightly. A little glimmer of the girl I fell in love with.
“I thought they would have taken your phone off you.” I wondered aloud.
“I’m not exactly at the clinic.” She said slowly.
“What do you mean?” I was confused.
“They let me go home. They are testing to see if I can be capable to be on my own while I continue treatment. Its meant to help me remain in a normal world so I dont feel like an outcast.” She explained. A smile formed across my face hearing this news.
“Is Mum with you?” I asked, suddenly worried.
“She checks on me every so often. Harry, dont panic. I’m taking things slowly at the moment. You just focus on the album.” She said and I heard a faint smile to her tone.
“I’ll be home soon.” I promised and hung up.
I waltzed back into the recording room and got back to work. I wasnt going to disappoint Meg. This was all for her.
Chapter Six.
Meg’s P.O.V
This place was driving me insane. I would rather spend my days wandering the halls of the rehab clinic than sitting in my apartment, starring at the TV. I was scared to go outside because of all the paps surrounding the building. I could disguise myself but that would take effort and I wasnt in the mood. But if I sat here any longer I would end up back in the hospital. My face was everywhere. In every single magazine had their own take on my condition. It was becoming nothing sort of annoying. Just once I wanted to open a magazine without seeing my photo with some rude caption underneath it.
I finally cracked. I had had enough of everything. I was at my limit and then over. I threw off the blanket that was covering my lower half and raced into my bedroom. I pulled out my suitcase and threw random items of clothing. I was pretty sure some were Harry’s. I didnt care. I needed to get out of here.
I did just that.
I jumped in my car and drove. I didnt know where I was going or how this was all going to work out. I just drove. Hoping that I would start to find myself again. It was a far stretch but I was determined to get better.
The only guilt I had was leaving Harry behind with no word.
Harry’s P.O.V
I was so thankful to be home. I just wanted to curl up on the couch with Meg watching TV. No worries or cares in the world. I loved my job but some days, all we wanted was the simple life. Even just for a minute. The van pulled to a stop outside our building and we filed out of the car. Paps and fans were around but were kept at bay. We grabbed our bags and headed up to our apartments.
“Alright boys, see you in a few weeks.” Paul waved goodbye as he walked back down the hall. We all waved after him and walked into our apartments. Louis closed the door behind us as I set my bags down by the door.
“Meg?” I called walking around the place trying to find her. She wasnt in our room asleep, she wasnt in the bathroom. She wasnt even in the lounge room. I began panicking as I kept searching.
“Whats the matter?” Louis asked me as I walked back into the lounge.
“Meg’s not here.” I said, my eyebrows pulling together in confusion.
“Maybe she’s at your Mum’s.” Louis said. I nodded and pulled out my phone, dialing Mum’s number.
“Ah, baby brother.” Gemma answered with a chuckle.
“Hey Gem, is Meg there?” I asked casually.
“Uh, no. We thought she was at home. Isnt she?” Gemma also began panicking.
“No. I’ll ring her and see if she’s just gone out.” I said before hanging up and dialing Meg’s number.
It went straight to voicemail.
“Louis, I have that bad feeling again.” I muttered and he wrapped his arms around me.
“Lets go find her.” He smiled as we walked out of our apartment.
We informed the guys of what was going on and they jumped at the chance to help. I hated interrupting their rest but they said that they wanted her safe just as much as I did. Times like these where I was thankful for my brothers.
The police were involved as we combed the streets and important places. Meg was nowhere to be found. I kept trying her phone but her inbox was full. I threw my phone at the couch cushions in frustration. Why would she run? Why would she tear herself away from me?
Why?
Meg’s P.O.V
I checked into the cheap motel under a false name and settled into a room for the night. I turned the TV on and up came my face. Oh shit.
‘Harry Styles and his band mates were out in full force with police tonight looking for his girlfriend Meg. If anyone has information about her whereabouts please contact the number on the screen.’
I knew I had taken this too far. But I held myself in this cheap motel knowing this was what I needed right now. No cameras, no fans, no nothing to make me sink further and further into my depression. I couldnt stay in this motel either. Soon enough the person at reception would put two and two together and I would be coaxed back into that life. I quickly signed out of the motel and jumped back into my car and sped off.
I hated driving at night but I needed to put a fair amount of distance behind me.
Then I saw blackness and went numb.
Chapter Seven.
“Harry, you need to learn to stop pacing.” Mum sighed.
We waited anxiously to find out where Meg was. We had heard nothing for the past 2 days and I was starting to lose it. The police had a lead to a cheap motel miles away but that went dead. I couldnt just sit around and wait. I needed to be searching for her. I grabbed my keys and headed for the door. Mum grabbed my arm and stopped me.
“Please Mum.” I begged. She looked into my eyes for a while before answering.
“I’m going with you.” She said grabbing our coats. I nodded and walked to my car, helping Mum into the passenger seat.
We followed the road until we finally ended up at the cheap motel that was a dead lead.
“Can I help you?” A young man asked me from behind the counter.
“Have you seen this girl?” I asked handing a picture of Meg over to him.
“The police asked me about her already.” He sighed.
“Please.” I whispered. He sighed again and began typing away on the computer. Mum and I exchanged hopeful looks.
“Is this her?” He asked turning the monitor to face me. Mum and I gasped as we took her appearance in.
“Thats her.” I said, my voice breaking slightly.
“She checked in with a fake name then an hour later she checked back out and sped away. Thats all I know, I’m sorry.” He said.
“Thank you.” I smiled and ran back to my car, following the direction that he pointed in.
I wasnt prepared for what I saw.
Meg’s car was beside the road, crushed. I pulled the car to a stop and jumped out, racing over to the wreck. Tears stung in my eyes as I looked inside the car. Meg was still inside, bleeding and eyes closed. I reached in and checked for a pulse, praying that there was one.
“Mum, call and ambulance now. She has a weak pulse. I need to try and get her out.” I said quickly.
“What if she has spinal injuries?”Mum tried.
“I’d rather have her in a wheelchair than not have her at all.” I said strongly, pulling on the caved in door. Mum spoke away to the ambulance and said they’d be here fast. There was a station just a few miles up the road. Mum ran over to me and tried helping me get the door open so I could get to her. Through countless tries, the door simply broke off and fell to the gravelled ground. I reached around Meg and unbuckled her seatbelt, thankful that she remembered the smallest saftey precautions. I yanked on the belt until it came off. It wasnt budging. Mum looked around for something sharp to cut it.
“Not even a piece of glass.” Mum groaned still looking around. She fished into her handbag hoping to find something.
Nothing.
Tears were streaming down my face as I pulled on the belt with all my strength. Whatever I tried just wasnt working. I started yelling as I yanked harder each time.
“Harry, look.” Mum said pointing to Meg who’s eyes were beginning to open.
“Baby, I’m right here. Don’t panic, you’re going to be alright.” I hushed reaching for her hand.
“Harry.” She whispered.
“I’m here.” I said back just as I heard the ambulance siren near.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered before her eyes shut again.
“Meg? Meg!!!” I yelled as Mum pulled me away from the car. I kicked and screamed for her and yelled out her name. The paramedics rushed to get her out of the car which they managed to do.
“Pulse is weakening rapidly. We need to get her to hospital now.” One man said. His partner nodded and they both worked quickly.
Mum and I looked on with tears rolling down our faces. Meg was hoisted onto a stretcher and quickly put into the back of the ambulance. I walked over and climbed into the back of the van with Meg. I held her hand just out of the way of the paramedics. Meg had an oxygen mask on as the ambulance set off, sirens and all.
“We’re going to have to start CPR soon. Her pulse is dropping too quickly.” One man said. My breath caught as her hand was pulled from mine and they began performing CPR on her.
I sat there lifeless, helpless as I watched the girl I loved slipped away from me.
Chapter Eight.
It seemed all I was doing waiting. Waiting for that bad news to come my way. The news that would change my life.
The news that Meg didnt make it.
Doctors and nurses rushed around the emergency room but none came my way. So I had no choice but to sit there and wait. Mum rushed into the room with the lads trailing behind her. They all rushed over to me and hugged me tightly. I wouldnt break down in front of them. I wouldnt break until I heard the news.
“Any news so far sweetheart?” Mum asked as we all sat down in the horrible plastic chairs.
“None except she was in surgery. That was a few hours ago now.” I sighed and felt a hand on my shoulder. I knew that hand. Louis.
“She’s tough Haz. She’ll get through this.” Zayn said softly surprising us all.
My face dropped when a doctor walked over to us. His face sent my heart racing. This was about to be bad. Mum and the boys put a hand on my shoulder, bracing me for bad news.
“Mr Styles?” He started and I gulped. “Well you can relax, its good news. It was close but we got her back. Now, her injuries are pretty severe so she is in an induced coma until they start to heal. Would you like to come see her?” He asked. I nodded quickly as I took in the information.
She was alright. She made it. I breathed a sigh of relief as we all followed the doctor. Mum held my hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.
“When she comes out, I want you two to be under my roof for a while.” Mum said and I just nodded. I couldnt find words. I just wanted to see that Meg was still breathing.
Meg laid in the hospital bed all bandaged up. She had stitches in her forehead and small cuts all over her face. Cuts or no cuts she still looked beautiful.
“Were there any other injuries?” Mum asked the doctor as I moved slowly to Meg’s side.
“She has several internal injuries so I’d advise everyone to be careful with her once she is released. She lost alot of blood as well so she has to have several transfusions in the coming weeks.” He said.
“When will she wake up?” I said in a small voice. I was surprised that he heard me.
“You’re going to have to wait a fair bit. I’d say about two to three weeks.” He said softly. I just nodded and carefully held Meg’s hand.
The doctor kept on talking to Mum but I tuned everyone out. I kept my eyes on the beautiful girl in front of me. Her chest rose and fell softly as if she was merely sleeping. I kept the thought that she was only sleeping in my head as I sat.
I wasnt moving from her side.
Meg’s P.O.V
You would not believe the pain I was in. I felt like my body was repeatedly being bashed around, kicked, stabbed and even set on fire. I felt a cool hand on mine and faintly heard voices. I willed my eyes to open and look around but nothing was happening. The signal was getting to my eyes but they werent responding like they should have. It was frustrating as I tried to move something that was attached to me. I felt like crying. If only my tear ducts would work also. All I could do was wait and hope that my body would respond to me.
The voices around me started to become clearer as time went on. I easily recognized one voice. The voice I could find in a loud room. Harry. He sounded so upset. I just wanted to wrap my arms around him and tell him I was alright. But I couldnt. I was stone. I could feel his thumb trace circles on the back of my hand.
“I love you.” He whispered and pressed his lips to my hand.
Then it occurred to me. I hadnt said I loved him back. I never said those three little words. I needed to wake up, I needed to move, I needed to tell him I loved him too. I couldnt die now. He needed me and I needed him. I thrashed inside my stone body, desperately trying to move something.
In the end I stopped trying. I was defeated.
Harry’s P.O.V
3 weeks later.
“Harry, you need to see outside at some point.” Mum sighed placing a hand on my shoulder as she walked into the room. I looked up at her and then out the window.
“There, I’ve seen outside.” I said flatly and returned to looking back at Meg. Mum sighed and sat down in the chair opposite the bed.
“Have any of the boys rung you today?” Mum asked. I nodded.
“Lou and Liam did. We have an interview on Friday.” I said depressed. I didnt want to leave her side but I had no choice. Simon wasnt allowing me to stay.
“I’ll stay with her while you’re there. And keep your phone with you so I can update you.” Mum said and I nodded in response.
Meg was due to come out of the coma on the Thursday but the doctor said anytime she can wake up. She just needed to let herself wake up. Thursday was fast approaching and Meg showed no signs of waking up. But I sat and I prayed that she would. That her eyes would open and she would smile at me and we’d live happily ever after.
But they stayed closed.
I rested my head on the bed and closed my eyes. I might as well get some sleep while I waited.
Then her finger twitched.
My head snapped up quickly as I starred in disbelief. Maybe my mind was playing tricks with me. So I waited and watched to see if my mind was playing with me.
Her finger twitched again.
“Meg?” I whispered as her eyes fluttered open.
Chapter Nine.
I didnt want to open my eyes but something inside of me opened them for me. Everything was blurry until I blinked. Harry’s shocked face was starring back at me. I was glad I remembered who he was. That would have been ugly. I looked down at our intertwined hands and smiled. Harry stood up and sat on the edge of the bed and reached his free hand to cup my face. I smiled and leaned into his touch.
“You are here.” He whispered still in shock.
“Disappointed?” I questioned raising an eyebrow.
“I just didnt think it was real. I was hoping that I’d wake up and we’d be cuddling in bed together.”He said lowering his head.
“When I get out of here, I promise we can do that.” I smiled and leaned in for a kiss when a sharp pain in my ribs stopped me.
“Broken rib.” Harry said and carefully pushed me back onto the pillows, releasing the pressure on my ribs. I sighed heavily and it hurt.
“Harry, I’m s..” I started to say but he cut me off.
“I have to get a nurse to tell her you’re awake.” Harry said leaning down and picking up the buzzer. He pressed it and placed it back on the bed beside me.
Minutes later a nurse walked in and smiled.
“Welcome back. How is the pain?” She asked.
“After discovering that there was pain, I’d say about a 10.” I sighed, once again when I shouldnt have.
“Dont worry, I have something for the pain.” She said walking over to my IV and placing a syringe into the tube that was in my arm. I could feel the morphine race through my system and the pain subsided.
“I dont want to go back to sleep.” I mumbled feeling more and more tires as the seconds ticked by.
“Sleep is what you need right now sweetheart.” She said patting my arm lightly and walking out of the room. Harry saw the look on my face before I realized. He cupped my face and began shushing me.
“Dont work yourself up.” He whispered touching his forehead to mine.
“Please dont leave.” I whispered. He smiled and nodded. I carefully moved over so Harry could lie down next to me. He placed his arm around my shoulders and I placed my head on his chest.
“And you said I had to wait.” Harry laughed and kissed my forehead and then I fell asleep.
Harry’s P.O.V
I tried not to make any sudden movements in case it hurt Meg. But my arm was beginning to lose feeling in it. I looked down at Meg in my arms. She looked so peaceful and out of harms way. The question was burning on my lips. I needed to know why she ran and what she was running from. But I waited. She needed to sleep right now and I was in no position to distub her. I knew what she was like on hardly any sleep. Now add a broken rib into that equation, I was terrified to face the wrath.
I shifted my arm carefully and began to get feeling back in it. But it woke Meg up. She stirred beside me and winced in pain as she tried to sit up.
“Hey, dont sit up.” I said trying to help her back down.
“It hurts Harry. I need to sit up.” She winced again and again. I fumbled around the side of the bed for the buzzer and pressed the tiny button. Meg began crying as the pain became too much. I held onto her while the nurse came rushing into the room.
“Harry, I’m going to need you to hop of the bed for a minute.” She smiled at me. I simply nodded and did as she asked. I felt helpless as Meg cried out in pain. My Mum and the lads rounded the corner into the room and I ran towards them. Mum’s arms were around me in a second.
“Whats going on?” Mum asked
“I dont know.” I whispered as we all looked on as a team of nurses ran into the room and helped Meg. She was screaming in pain. Every scream, I flinched as if I was the one in pain.
Meg started coughing suddenly.
The white sheets started to turn red.
Chapter Ten.
“Let me see her!” I growled as the lads held me back from the door. A nurse ushered me outside and closed the door. I needed to see her, I needed to be by her side.
“Calm down Mr Styles. You need to go wait in the waiting room until we control the situation.” The nurse warned, her face all serious.
“But whats happening?” I asked panting slightly after I dropped fighting.
“We dont know yet but you will be informed when we do.” She said motioning us to the waiting room.
I didnt sit down. I kept pacing back and forth, ignoring my Mum’s requests to sit down.
We waited for hours and hours and still nothing. I was losing my mind. I walked up to the triage nurse and asked if there was anything new. She shook her head and I walked back to where my friends and Mum sat. I eventually took a seat and let my eyes close. I felt a pair of arms wrap around my shoulders and pull me close. It was Mum. She had a habit of cuddling both me and Gemma even though we were growing up. It kept Mum happy so we gave in.
I rested my head on her shoulder and finally let myself actually sleep.
No one bothered me which was nice. It had been a while since I had a decent sleep.
5 hours later.
Meg’s P.O.V
My eyes fluttered open only to snap shut again with the bright light hitting my pupils. There was a pain just below my ribs and I felt various wires and tubes attached to me. I opened my eyes again much slower, but still squinting at the light. There were two nurses checking over some monitors behind me and a doctor looking at a clipboard in front of my bed. My waking hadnt gone unnoticed.
“Oh good, you’re awake. How are you feeling?” The doctor asked me.
“Slight pain and confusion. What happened?” I asked. He walked over to stand beside my bed.
“What do you remember?” He asked and I thought back as far as I could.
“I remember sleeping alongside Harry and then I got a sharp pain in my stomach. The sheets turned red.” I trailed off looking down at the clean white sheets. Someone must have changed them. The colour was too bright for it to be a dream.
“Your rib lightly punctured your lung but we didnt understand why you were bleeding so much. We ran some tests and..” He trailed off as if searching for the right words to use.
“What did you find?” I asked, my voice choking slightly at the end.
“You have cancer.” He dropped.
My entire body went ridged. It felt like all the blood in my body had been drained onto the sheets that covered me. My brain didnt fully cope with the news. I honestly didnt want to hear it but there it was.
“Has it spread?” I asked looking up at the doctor. He nodded slowly. Tears threatened to break lose. I kept them back. For now.
“There is a tumor in your brain and in your lung.” He said. I took a deep breath to settled myself.
“Is Harry still here?” I asked just as the tears began to spill.
“I’ll go get him quickly.” He smiled and left the room quickly.
A sob broke from my chest. I curled my knees up to my chest and held them close.
Harry came bursting into the room but stopped in the doorway. I looked up at him and he ran to my side. I wrapped my arms around his neck and sobbed. His hands found my back and rubbed smoothing circles. The words bubbled to my lips.
“I love you Harry.” I said as I continued to cry.
Harry’s P.O.V
3 weeks later.
Meg was exhausted. The doctors had given her and I so much information over the past few weeks and its been overwhelming to say the least. Meg had also been given a choice. Chemo or not. She had a few days before she had to make her final decision. We finally got to go home, but not to our apartment in London. We opted for staying with Mum.
Meg and I cuddled up on my bed watching the TV. Her head was on my chest while she looked out the side window.
“I dont think I’m going to do it.” Meg said, breaking the silence between us. I looked down at her. I knew what she meant. Didnt make it any less easier to take.
“The doctors said it could work.” I tried.
“Yeah, could. Do you think I should give it a try?” She asked sitting up.
“Honestly, yes. I just dont want you to give up.”I said slowly. Her expression changed. It wasnt sad or angry or blank.
She had the look of a fighter. It was in that moment when I believed she would pull through this.
She could beat this.
We could beat this.
5 hours later.
Meg and I were woken up suddenly by a group of girls outside my Mum’s house singing What Makes You Beautiful at the top of their lungs. Meg groaned and rolled over facing away from me. I sat up and looked out my bedroom window. Massive mistake. They all spotted me and started screaming louder and louder. I fell back onto my bed and heard the screams disappear, only to be replaced with a chant of ‘We want Harry.’
“Alright girls, thats enough. Meg needs her rest.” I heard Mum shoo them away. I peeked outside and saw a few girls stay behind.
“Well why cant Harry just come out? We only want to see him.” One girl rudely said.
“He wants to stay with Meg right now. Let him be.” Mum said before walking back into the house. I kissed Meg’s forehead and climbed over her and off the bed. I met Mum downstairs in the kitchen.
“Honey, stay with Meg. Dont go out there.” Mum sighed as I put my coat on.
“They wont leave unless I do. Meg didnt get any sleep last night and those girls yelling and screaming doesnt help.” I said rolling my eyes and walking out the front door.
The screamed as I approached. I held a finger to my lips as I got closer.
“Dont scream. Meg needs her rest.” I hushed as I signed paper and other items that were being pushed my way. I smiled for cameras and had a little chat with them.
“Hey, I’m sorry about Meg. How is she doing?” One fan whispered to me while some girls were crying over their signed piece of paper. I looked into the girls eyes and she smiled.
“She’s doing it tough but she still manages a smile.” I smiled back.
“I’m glad. Can you give this to her for me?” She asked handing me an envelope. I nodded and took it, giving her a hug before I waved goodbye to the crowd and walked back inside.
I took the letter out of the envelope and begun reading. Tears welled up in my eyes and a lump formed in my throat as I read the fans words. She was telling Meg to never give up and to keep smiling. I smiled and folded the letter and pushed open my bedroom door.
Meg was sitting up in the bed, looking tired and so fragile. She smiled and held out her arms. I smiled and walked over to her, sitting next to her.
From the street, you could clearly see me sitting on my bed so there was no doubt the few remaining fans could see our embrace.
“This is from one of the girls outside.” I said pulling back and handing her the letter. We sat in silence as she read it. Tears flew down her cheeks as she read the words on the paper.
“Can you go get her if she’s still out there?” Meg asked sniffing and wipping her eyes with a tissue. I nodded and walked back outside.
I spotted the girl waiting on the side of the road. I walked over to her and stood next to her. She jumped slightly.
“Is this your new things Harry? Scaring fans.” She laughed. I smiled.
“Whats your name?” I asked.
“Melissa.”
“Meg read your letter and she wants to meet you. Do you mind?” I asked.
“I’m just waiting for my Mum but she’ll be about an hour. Sure, I’d love to meet her.” Melissa smiled and walked beside me into the house.
I lead Melissa upstairs and into my room. Meg tried to stand up so I rushed over and helped her.
“Meg, Melissa.” I introduced.
Meg wrapped her arms around Melissa in a tight hug which Melissa returned.
“Thank you so much.” Meg whispered to Melissa.
“When I heard about it I just had to do something to keep your spirits up.”Melissa explained.
I stood back letting the two girls talk and get to know each other. I quietly shut the door and walked downstairs. Mum was sitting in the kitchen reading a magazine. She looked up as I sat down next to her.
“That was a beautiful thing you did.” She smiled reaching for my hand.
“She asked for her.” I smiled.
“Still.” Mum laughed squeezing my hand.
Our heads turned towards the hall as we heard a pair of feet walking towards us. Meg looked up and smiled.
“Mum, this is Melissa. The girl who wrote Meg the letter.” I introduced.
“Its a pleasure to meet you Anne. You and the other Mum’s have more fans than the boys.” She laughed. Mum, Meg and I laughed along with her.
“Its a pleasure to meet you as well Melissa. Are you safe getting home?” Mum asked.
“Yeah, my Mum just rung me and said she is out the front.” Melissa announced. We all stood up and walked her to the front door and said goodbye, making sure that she was safe inside her mothers care before shutting the front door.
“Is anyone hungry?” Mum asked as Meg headed back upstairs.
“No thanks Anne. I need to lie down.” Meg smiled as she walked upstairs. I watched her walk before turning to my Mum.
“Stay with her. I’ll bring something up just incase you both get hungry.” Mum smiled and walked into the kitchen. I nodded and walked back upstairs to lay with Meg.
Meg’s P.O.V
I didnt know if my body was just always tired or it was my brain thinking my body was tired. But there I was, curled up in Harry’s bed, suddenly feeling really cold. The cancer was taking its toll. I hadnt even started chemo yet and I was already tired. Too much movement meant that I had to lay down for several hours.
Chemo was going to be a bitch.
I heard a light knock on the door and it pushed open. Harry poked his curly head through the open door and stepped through. He shut the door quietly behind him and walked over to the bed. I sat up and scooted over so he could lie down. He placed his arms around my shoulders and pulled me to his side. I placed my head on his chest and tightly wrapped my arm around his waist. Harry placed a kiss to my head and I sighed.
“Still tired?” He whispered. I nodded against his chest.
“Hopefully it will go away soon. I feel too lazy. I need to get up and do things.” I said.
“I know sweetheart.” Harry sighed and kissed my head again.
We lay in a few minutes of silence before I got sick of it.
“Our anniversary is coming up.” I said looking up at him.
“Anything you want to do?” Harry asked with a smile on his face.
“There is one thing.” I said biting my lip. It had been nagging me for a while so I decided to grow a pair and ask him.
“What is that?” He asked. His eyebrows pulled together in confusion.
“We’ve been together for about 4 years now. And I have put you through so much and you have stuck by my side instead of running away far and wide. I love you with all my heart and cannot being to thank you for what you’ve done for me.” He starred at me as I took a deep breath and sat up. “Harry Edward Styles, will you marry me?” I asked watching his expression.
His jaw almost hit the floor as he processed what I had asked. My heart beat so fast that I thought it would literally burst. A slow wide smile appeared on his face as he held my hands in his.
“Meg Rose Harrison, I would love to marry you.” He replied and crashed his mouth onto mine. I smiled into the kiss as our mouths worked together.
Harry’s P.O.V
It was official. Harry Styles was engaged. I saw my face everywhere after the news had broken. It didnt help matters when Meg and I went to pick out a ring. The media kept their distance from us while Meg was undergoing chemo but that still didnt stop the stories. Some magazines claimed that Meg’s condition was worsening by the day.
In truth it was but not to the point where we had to get married today because she’d be gone by tomorrow. No. Meg still had plenty of fight left in her. She wasnt going anywhere for a while. That much was certain. The tumor had taken well to the onslaught of chemo and had reduced slightly. Not enough to make us sure she was getting better, but enough that we could have some breathing room.
I was driving back to the recording studio in London with Meg in the passenger seat. She had fallen asleep and we were half way there. I held her hand while I drove. I rubbed small circles into the back of her hand and had a smile on my face. Meg stirred as we neared closer to our apartment building.
“Good morning beautiful.” I smiled as I pulled into a parking spot outside our apartment.
“What time is it?” She asked still half asleep.
“Just past midday. Need help getting upstairs before I leave?” I asked helping her out of the car.
“Nah, I got it. Go make music.” She smiled and reach up on her tiptoes to kiss me. I held the kiss there long enough for the following paps to get a few decent pictures.
I carried Meg’s bags as well as my own upstairs and into our apartment. I turned around expecting to see Meg but she was still walking up the stairs. Although she said she didnt want any help, I picked her up and placed her on my back and walked the few last stairs to our apartment. I set her on her feet and recieved a kiss for my effort.
Meg walked off to the lounge room while I made up some tea for her. Meg laid flat out on the couch and pulled the blanket off the back and wrapped it around herself. The kettle boiled and I poured it into our cups and walked into the lounge room.
Meg sat up slightly and grasped the cup with both hands, lightly blowing on the hot liquid before taking a small sip.
“You’re going to be late if you dont get a move on now.” Meg said nudging my leg with her foot. I gulped the rest of my tea down and picked up my bag. I kissed Meg before heading out to meet the guys downstairs.
Chapter Eleven.
Meg’s P.O.V
I jolted awake later that day to an empty and quiet apartment. It took a minute to remember why Harry wasnt home. He and the boys were hard at work on their latest album. They wanted to make it perfect so they put alot of hard work into each session, careful not to waste anyones time.
I had kept a big secret from Harry. In his mind, he thought I was getting better. In truth, I wasnt. I knew in my body that it wasnt healing or getting rid of the tumor. As much as I tried to think positive, it just wasnt changing.
This was the end of my road. I figured I only had a few months at most. My eye caught the ring on my hand and I starred at it. How could I marry Harry in the next coming weeks without him thinking the worst? I jumped when I heard a knock on the door. I stood up carefully and answered it. Danielle and Eleanor stood there with big smiles on their faces.
“Get dressed. We’re going for lunch.” Danielle smiled as they both pushed me into the bedroom and helped me pick out an outfit. I laughed and went along with them. As I was dressing myself, I couldnt help but stare in the mirror at just how skinny I was actually becoming. It was scary. I rugged up with a scarf and beanie and a big warm jacket as we all headed out to a cafe for lunch.
“How are you doing sweetie?” Danielle asked after we ordered our food.
“I need to tell you both something but you cant tell the guys.” I started and recieved nods from them. “I dont have long. Its not getting better or going away.” I sighed.
Danielle and Eleanor exchanged sad glances as they took in the news. They both reached across the table and held my hands. Danielle and Eleanor had tears forming in their eyes as we discussed what I wanted to do before I went. They were reluctant to tell me that I’d be fine. They knew deep down I wasnt going to last much longer.
I was comforted in the fact that these two girls had taken me under their wings and cared so deeply for me. If telling these girls was tough, I dreaded the day when I had to tell Harry.
Did I have to tell Harry?
Harry’s P.O.V
2 months later.
I rolled out of the hotel bed and slumped to the floor. The lads groaned as they woke up around me. I stood up and walked over to the window. There were a few fans down on the street waving up at me, screaming and carrying on. I waved back before walking into the bathroom to get myself ready for the days events.
I should have been elated with today. Meg and I were finally getting married. But today just didnt have that normal wedding happiness. Meg had been given weeks. The tumor got worse in a matter of weeks. So we pushed up the wedding day before I lost her.
I hopped out of the shower and let the other guys take their turns before we all got dressed and ready. Lou, our make up artist, made me sit in her chair first as Lux played on my lap quietly. I was scrolling through my twitter feed and replying to some tweets about my wedding. Everyone said they expected Liam to get married first and were surprised when I was the first one to tie the knot.
I sighed, trying my hardest to get into a happier mood.
Meg’s P.O.V
The heart rate went up as soon as Danielle and Eleanor helped me into my dress and buttoned it up at the back. The long white silk material feathered out around me as it reached the floor. My hair hung in light waves down my back and over my shoulders.
I had put weight back on thankfully so I didnt look like I was swimming in my dress. Although I did have to have it taken in a few times. The girls stepped back and smiled at me.
“Beautiful.” Eleanor smiled and I caught stray tear fall down her face.
“No tears. Remember our promise?” I smiled choking back tears of my own.
We heard a knock at the door and Danielle went to answer it. Lou, Lux and Anne stepped through. Lux ran straight up to me and hugged my lower half. She touched the material of my dress. “Pretty.” She giggled. I bent down and kissed her forehead.
“Got nothing on you.” I smiled and she giggled as she ran back to Lou.
Anne wrapped her arms around me and hugged me tightly.
“You look beautiful sweetheart.” Anne said starting to cry.
“Hey, I made everyone promise no tears!” I laughed wiping away a few stray ones of my own.
“Time to go Meg.” Danielle smiled opening the door.
I took a deep breath and began walking outside.
Harry’s P.O.V
5 weeks later.
Meg didnt want to be in hospital when it was time for her to go but she had no choice. Doctors orders were to be followed. Meg and I laid together curled up beside each other on her hospital bed. I was playing with her wedding band and she was smiling down at our hands quietly. Meg’s breathing had slowed down slightly since this morning. I held onto the last few hours I had holding her in my arms.
“Harry, I want you to be happy. I dont care what you say. You need to be happy after I go. You will always love me and I will always love you.” Meg said with a few tears falling down her cheeks. I wiped them away and kissed her forehead.
“Please Harry. For me.” She whispered. I looked into my wife’s eyes and nodded. I couldnt hold back the tears any longer.
“I promise.” I said before kissing her lightly.
Meg rested her head lightly on my chest as she closed her eyes. “I love you Harry.” She whispered.
Meg closed her eyes for the last time before slipping away from me. Tears fell from my eyes and a sob broke from my chest as I held her tighter.
“I love you too. Forever.”
The End.
